My Powerbook G4 667/DVD (Purchased November 2001 for $3000US) has a serious problem with its paint finish. These photos illustrate the poor paint quality on the outer bezel of the unit. Many users have noted similar (although less-severe) issues with their units; enough to prompt http://www.tipaint.com to supply touch-up paint kits for the Titanium Powerbook. Unfortunately, my machine's damage is beyond touch-up paint. This is my *THIRD* defective Powerbook in 5 years. I was a victim of the "loose hinge" issue with the Wallstreet G3 Powerbooks:

I recently ran across this well-informed explanation of the factors that may cause this deterioration: http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?13@195.pY41ap2adpr.5@.3bbb8644 Here are links to other people's photos of their defective TiBook paint: http://homepage.mac.com/jmatwood/tibook/ http://www.uc.pt/ihti/joaquim/titaniumproblem/ http://community.webshots.com/user/mackgammon http://homepage.mac.com/jbondo/PhotoAlbum1.html http://bayoudog.com/powerbook/ Here is a link to a thread on the Apple discussion board dealing with this topic. http://makeashorterlink.com/?D201212F (you may need an AppleID to access the forum) *In my case, Apple repaired my powerbook free of charge. They replaced the affected parts, minus the paint on the hinges. Take a look at the result: http://www.djedwhite.com/photo/photo.php?dir=Fixed_Powerbook and my letter to Apple: http://www.djedwhite.com/letter.html UPDATE!! My Powerbook was replaced after a total of FIVE repair trips. I was forced to remove the Airport card and additional RAM before shipping it off for replacement. Here's what I found when I opened the machine.... http://www.djedwhite.com/photo/photo.php?dir=Old_Powerbook GROSS!! -- Here's a solution: TiArmor - http://www.vixinc.com TiArmor adds a thin layer of protection from scratches, oils, and dust for the high-traffic areas of the PowerBook. TiArmor protects with a layer of soft polyurethane applied with the non-stick durability of a much harder material. Check out http://www.vixinc.com for more information. This looks like a promising product. |
